Art Simone On Drag Race Down Under
RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under kicked off its first-ever series on May 1st, 2021; where the 10 stars will be competing against each other. And a familiar face, Art Simone, who first appeared on the spin-off show’s first season back in 2009, has come back to redeem herself.
In case you missed her on RuPaul’s Drag Race inaugural season, Art was eliminated on the show’s ep 2. After RuPaul asked Art to “sashay away”, instead of making a gracious exit, she had something to say.
“I’m very disappointed that I’ve let down all my friends and family at home. And, I’ve failed, completely. I have thousands of fans that are expecting a certain level from me and I clearly didn’t deliver it… and I’m the strongest one here“.
To which the crew tried to console Art, “but you were here“.
In response, Art said, “That means nothing, I will never be able to live this down, ever.”
But Art was given a season on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under. Her entrance was presented as Art emerging out of a dumpster “filled with items that people have tossed away — things that deserve a second chance.”
After her appearance, Art’s participation didn’t seem it was appreciated by all of her co-stars. It’s understandable — on top of being extremely talented, her meanness wasn’t something her competitors should look up to.
Moreover, after a few episodes of her participation, over three queens were sent home including Coco Jumbo (who sent Art home). But, RuPaul later chose Art to bring back to the competition, and Coco wasn’t happy about it. She called out the show for racial favoritism over Twitter writing,
“Give the white girl another go she deserves it! #DragRaceDownUnder”
Trivia: Art’s first elimination from RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under came after she impersonated Bindi Irwin for the Snatch Game. Surprisingly, he later revealed that RuPaul didn’t know who her Snatch Game character — internationally famous television personality, conservationist and zookeeper, and the daughter of the late Steve Irwin was.
